BACKGROUND
The Michigan Community College Press Association is an organization that participates, as a client, in the capstone class of the IPR program at Central Michigan University.
In the Spring semester of 2020, I became part of the team of JRN 556 students responsible for ensuring the success of the 2020 MCCPA Conference.
The COVID-19 Pandemic ensured the cancellation of the conference. But it was still important to notice the efforts of the student journalists.
See how we got it done:
GETTING ORGANIZED
The MCCPA is an organization that represents student journalists at Community Colleges across the State of Michigan.
Our team was tasked with organizing the award conference to recognize the best journalists and journalism of the year.
I was responsible for the development of the visual theme of the conference, create the program design, and communicate with both colleges and judges. Eventually, with COVID, I became in charge of web design and development.
THEME AND PROGRAM
Modern Art-Deco Minimalism
In the search for a design and theme that would be simple, elegant and original, we started with modern designs. To add an original and unforgettable touch, the art-deco framing was added.
The black, white and gold color palate was quickly chosen.
SUBMISSIONS
One of the biggest responsibilities I was tasked with was maintaining communication with colleges submitting work, and with the judges who are deciding the results of each category.
In order to ensure the best organization and best results, I made the infographic on the right to communicate easy and clearly.
COVID-19 CANCELS EVENT
Colleges began submitting materials, and those materials were being sent off to judges for judging when the COVID-19 Pandemic struck the United States and forced us into lockdown. While being restricted from working together in person, I realized a well-made website would be the closest thing to replacing the conference as a whole.
